Colley’s Pools & Spas’ swimming pool leak detection expert will follow a systematic approach in an attempt to locate your pool’s leak. Typically done during warmer weather, the process involves collecting and analyzing a great deal of information. Our specially-trained technicians will utilize their knowledge of swimming pool operations and construction, use of specialized equipment and on the job experience as they locate leaks in your pool.

NOTE: Our leak detection service is only offered from mid-June through the end of August.

1. Gather Information
Through conversations with the pool owner and observations of the pool, confirm that the water loss being observed is indeed the result of a leak. A “Bucket Test” can be performed to determine if the water loss is due to evaporation or if it is a leak. Other tests such as the “Pump On/Pump Off Test” will provide a useful base of information that will be helpful as you continue the leak detection process.

2. Pressure Test Plumbing Lines
Regardless of the suspected location of the leak, a pressure test of all plumbing lines should be done to confirm whether they do or do not have a leak.

3. Pin Point Underground Plumbing Leaks
By using a regulated air source (compressor or nitrogen tank) to induce a constant stream of air into the leaking line a noise is created underground as air escapes into water saturated soil. Use a listening device to listen through the earth for sound. The leak will likely be at the point where the sound is loudest and clearest.

We also use SeeSnake Compact Cameras that enables technicians to scope a line to pin point a leak visually in minutes.

4. Check Fittings and Cracks in Pool Structures
Using a Dye Tester, put a small amount of dye near suspected leak areas in the structure of the pool to see if the dye is pulled out of the pool. Check skimmers, return fittings, lights, cracks, main drains, and hydrostatic valves. Diving equipment may be necessary for checking for leaks at the bottom of the pool.

5. Pinpoint Leaks in Vinyl Liner
Use the LeakTrac 2200 to pinpoint even the smallest liner leaks in minutes.
